Details about the Great Book Race

This year the Great Book Race will be on Tuesday, Dec. 6!

West Middlesex Jr./Sr. High School, hosts of the GBR, have announced that the Great Book Race will be held Tuesday, December 6.

Tentative times: GC students will leave right after school, the contest usually starts at 5:00 p.m. The contest is held at West Middlesex Jr./Sr. High School.  Our bus will return to GCMS about 9 p.m. You will have an opportunity to purchase pizza, salads, subs, and so on there for dinner.

There is no cost to participate.  However, we usually come up with a Team T-Shirt and if you want to have one, you will need to pay for that yourself (usually about $10).

    Great Book Race 2014

For many years now, our students have had the opportunity to participate in The Great Book Race (an annual reading competition for students in grades 7 - 12 in Mercer County).  This is completely voluntary, and we are limited by the host school to 2 or 3 teams of 12 students each.  Reading teachers help promote the contest as a fun way to get together with other book lovers in a one night friendly competition.  Mrs. Walter, Mrs. Waugaman, Mr. Lettie and I chaperoned this year - taking our two teams to West Middlesex High School in November.  The students really enjoy the contest (one team placed 4th and one placed 5th) and get involved with the team organization, practice sessions and so on that are held during the fall.  Click on the LibGuide below to see a list of the books!

    GCMS Teams 2013

In December 2013, our GCMS Team: "The Lily Pad" took 3rd place with an overall score of 68.  And, "The Moose Herd" and "The Hawke's Nest" teams each scored 66 - which tied for 4th place.  Keep in mind the winning team scored 76.  So, we were really close!

In 2012, the GCMS Team won first place in the Junior Division.
